History of Tunitas Creek

Tunitas Creek is a 6.6 mile-long stream in San Mateo. Tunitas is Spanish for "little prickly pears."

The creek starts at an altitude at close to 2000 feet and flows to the pacific ocean at Tunitas Creek Beach.

Fun fact - Steelhead trout have been found in the creek.
The first European land exploration of Alta, California, the Spanish Portola Expedition, traveled along the coast on its way north, camping near today's San Gregoria, from October 24 to 26, 1769. On the return journey to San Diego, the party camped near Half Moon Bay on November 16, and at Tunitas Creek on November 17. Franciscan missionary Juan Crespi noted in his diary: "This morning broke very cloudy, and as soon as we started on our way it began to rain, and in the whole three leagues [about 7.8 miles (12.6 km)] that we traveled it was falling on us. We halted on the banks of a deep arroyo."

The name "Arroyo de Las Tunitas" appears on the diseños (claim maps) of both Rancho San Gregorio (1839) and Rancho Canada Verde (1838) because it was part of the boundary between them.

Tunitas Creek Beach is enclosed by 100-foot (30 m) cliffs. The cliffs just north of the creek outflow were the site of "Gordon's Chute", a ramp for sliding farm goods from the top of the cliffs to ships anchored below. Constructed in 1872 by Alexander Gordon, the chute was destroyed by a storm in 1885; eyebolts remain in the cliff-face.

The beach was formerly private, with a house on the cliff top, and was owned from 1998 to 2017 by a trust of musician Chris Issak. The property, comprising 58 acres (23 ha) was then purchased by the Peninsula Open Space Trust, who transferred it in 2020 to San Mateo County. In 2023, the county approved a project to create a public park, scheduled to open in 2024 after construction including creation of trails, parking, restrooms, and a ranger station.

There are several ways that we communicate within the water company.

The first way is by direct email and/or phone - so please make sure that the board and our water master have your most up-to-date contact information.

We have a private (members only) google group - https://groups.google.com/g/kingsmountainwater. Please email Eric if you'd like access to the this group.

If social media is your thing, we have a twitter feed: @kmpwco

Lastly, we post general news and updates on this website.

The annual meeting was a held on July 26. There are no changes to the rates or assessments for 2021. Billing has been untangled and some members will be receiving retro-active invoices for unbilled usage and/or unbilled assessment fees. This will be noted in upcoming billing cycles. Lisa will replace Gail as Secretary; Gail will focus on special projects in a non-board capacity.
It was great to meet new neighbors and see old faces as well!

Thanks to Mary and Pete for hosting the wonderful event on such a gorgeous afternoon!

We take pride in the quality of our water. If you are interested in the data, all of our Consumer Confidence reports are posted online here .

The EPA requires community water systems to deliver a Consumer Confidence Report, also known as an
annual drinking water quality report, to their
customers. These reports provide Americans information about their local drinking water quality.

What type of information is in the report?

  • The lake, river, aquifer, or other source of the drinking water;
  • A brief summary of the risk of contamination of the local drinking water source;
  • The regulated contaminant found in local drinking water;
  • The potential health effects of any contaminant detected in violation of an EPA health standard;
  • An accounting of the system's actions to restore safe drinking water;
  • An educational statement for vulnerable populations about avoiding Cryptosporidium;
  • Educational information on nitrate, arsenic, or lead in areas where these contaminants may be a concern;
  • Phone numbers of additional sources of information, including the water system;
  • EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline number 1-800-426-4791.
State reports may have state specific information however, they must also include the basic information outlined in the federal requirements.

Do you need a reason to get out in the world and interact? Forget what it is to speak with someone? Are you burned out from sitting in your work-from-home chair of despair?

Volunteer!
It's a great way to get to know your neighbors while gaining an understanding of what it takes to reliably provide superb quality water.

If you are interested in volunteer opportunities, please contact Tom. Remember, you will receive credit for each volunteer hour worked and can accumulate up to 10 hours per year in credit, which will then be applied to your account.
